Number of injuries in auto accidents still high

In Maryland and across the U.S., one of the most prevalent causes of death is car accidents. One new study from the National Safety Council shows that the total number of deaths in auto accidents has been relatively static from 2016 to 2018. This information can be important for those who have been injured in a motor vehicle accident as they seek compensation in a legal filing.

According to the NSC, there were approximately 40,000 fatalities in crashes in 2018. This is the third consecutive year that the number of deaths has exceeded 40,000.

In addition to the number of fatalities, there were 4.5 million serious injuries caused by car accidents in 2018. The cost of these accidents was $433.8 billion. The cost calculations include expenses for lost wages, medical expenses, damage to property and more.

While the NSC does not factor in the causes of accidents, the 2017 statistics indicate that there was a rise in pedestrian deaths. In addition, distracted driving is a major problem, as it was a factor in eight percent of accidents, while drowsy driving was blamed for two percent.

An auto accident can change a person's life, whether they have suffered injuries or lost a loved one. The aftermath can be life-changing and can include financial issues due to medical costs, lost wages, and lost companionship, along with numerous other problems. Those who are dealing with these issues must have legal advice from a law firm that has experience in assisting clients with personal injury cases.
