Car accidents can cause serious injuries

Many Severna Park residents have been unfortunate enough to be involved in a car accident. Although most accidents are minor fender-benders, some can cause serious injuries and even death. There are many injuries that can occur in a car accident.

Some of the most serious injuries that can occur in a car accident are head injuries. People can suffer a head injury if their head strikes a window, the dashboard or the steering wheel, for example. A traumatic brain injury can cause a concussion or even put a person in a coma, where they can lay unresponsive for a long period of time. It can cause permanent brain damage and even death.

Back injuries, such as spinal cord damage, are also common car accident injuries. A spinal injury can lead to paralysis, with a victim having reduced sensation in their hands, arms and legs, for example, or it can cause other permanent damage. Another common injury is whiplash. This occurs with a sudden jerk of the neck, such as when a driver or passenger is hit by another car. A whiplash injury may not show up right away, but in the days after a car accident it can cause pain and muscle and ligament damage. Additional car accident injuries can be broken bones, lacerations, internal injuries, collapsed lungs and broken ribs, among many others.

If a person has been injured in a car accident due to no fault of their own, they may have personal injury legal options. It is important to visit the accident scene and interview witnesses, review police reports and determine what happened to cause the accident. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.
