How much of a danger is drunk driving in America?

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2020 | personal injury |

These days, distracted driving gets much of the media attention when it comes to the dangers we all face on the roadways in America. But, the fact is that drunk driving also remains a significant problem in our country. Drunk drivers are taking their lives into their hands, and the lives of others as well. So, how much of a danger is drunk driving in America?

What do the statistics say?

Well, drunk driving is such a problem that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention keep track of statistics related to this issue. And the statistics show some startling figures. For example, the CDC statistics show that everyday approximately 29 people die in America due to a car wreck that involved an impaired driver. That comes out to about one person every 50 minutes, according to the CDC.

The per-day statistics are staggering, but when you put that all together for an entire year, the numbers are almost beyond belief. In 2016, for example, CDC statistics show that almost 10,500 people died in America due to car wrecks involving impaired drivers. When you consider that drunk driving – and drug-impaired driving too – are both entirely preventable actions, it is easy to see just how much of a problem this issue remains for our country.

Options for drunk driving crash victims

For those Maryland residents who are unfortunate enough to be injured in a car crash that was caused by a drunk driver, there may be legal options to pursue. A personal injury lawsuit could help victims recover much needed financial compensation. Drunk drivers and drug-impaired drivers need to be held accountable for their actions.
