Distracted driving continues as a car accident risk

When Maryland residents hit the road, they usually have a destination in mind, and they typically want to get to that destination safely. Unfortunately, numerous distracted drivers also hit the road, and it is difficult to know who is paying attention and who is not. In many cases, people do not know until they are involved in a car accident caused by a distracted driver.

When individuals think of distractions, it is common for cellphone use to first come to mind. Certainly, texting continues to be a prevalent issue among drivers as a recent survey of 1,000 drivers found that 24% of those participants named texting as the main cause of distraction. Other top distractions included using navigation systems and addressing kids while in the vehicle.

As part of the survey, 92% of the participants considered texting and driving as dangerous as drinking and driving. However, 42% still indicated that they have texted while driving. Of those, 11% said they text and drive daily while 50% said they have done it only a few times in their years of driving. Unfortunately, texting and driving just once could lead to a collision.

Any momentary distraction could cause a car accident, and if Maryland travelers are seriously injured in a crash caused by a distracted driver, they may want to consider their legal options. Filing a personal injury claim against the driver considered at fault for a crash could allow injured parties to seek compensation for damages permitted under state law. This process can be complicated, so it is wise to consider enlisting the help of experienced attorneys.
